My husband and I chose our two children to be co-executors. They are the only two heirs at this time, and they both share equally. We are close to our children and feel they would make their decisions based on our wishes and their love for each other.

My husband’s parents and my parents did the same thing. Executing my mother’s estate with my brother was simple and avoided any resentment that might have come with only one of us having been chosen.

My mother had a living will and gave me power of attorney over any health issues, since I lived close to her. When she decided to draw up a living will, I went with her. My brother was too upset with the idea of my mother’s death to participate. Maybe it is a female thing, but preparing for everything life unfailingly brings to us seemed practical. I was certainly emotional, but mother felt supported and confident, and also knew she was caring for her children. We had the opportunity to discuss not only her estate, but my own. Obviously, one day I would die and want someone to take care of my children.
